Fascial Manipulation® trainee teacher programme
The following steps outline the teacher-training programme for FM. To be a teacher has to be a follow the guidelines for teaching FM as established by Luigi Stecco and the AMF Teachers Board.
• Only a Senior FM teacher (a teacher who has 3 years teaching experience and has taught at least 5 courses) can propose a new candidate for FM teacher training. That Senior teacher will be the tutor/mentor of the candidate, and they will be responsible of the candidate’s training and conduct.
• The candidate that has successfully completed their training and has passed their final exam will get the qualification of ‘FM teacher’. Teachers of other manual therapy methods can be accepted as teacher candidates but, once they have passed the examination as a Fascial Manipulation teacher, they must teach exclusively FM from then on. This is applicable for Teacher candidate applications received after 01.01.2015 (Teachers Board Minutes N. 3, 2014).
• The new FM teacher should use FM as the main method in during their everyday clinical work clinical work, for at least 80% of cases. In case of the presence of FM trainees in their clinic, the percentage of cases treated with FM must be 100%.
• These rules are valid for every trainee teacher that will start their training after approval by the AMF Teachers Board on the 6th of June, 2015 (Teachers Board meeting N. 2, 6-6-2015).
Basic requirements to start training:
• Attendance of Level 1 & 2, twice over a minimum of 3 years, as well as attendance to any available master classes. 3rd level can be attended once before the beginning of the trainee program and one other time during the program itself.
• Previous education in other techniques or the completion of University Master Courses is considered to be advantageous.
• Knowledge of the English language
• Knowledge of informatic software (Powerpoint,Keynote, etc)
• At least 25 years old
3. Training
Training is divided into 3 steps. Each step requires the acquisition of different teaching skills :
1. Theoretical knowledge and FM students assistance during the courses
2. Practical skills, preparation of their own educational material, ability to answer
FM students’ questions
3. Ability to present any lesson during the course and to treat a patient in front of the class.
Any of the 3 previous steps can be evaluated by different teachers. It is preferable that the candidate assists and is evaluated by at least 3 different teachers during their training.
• The FM teacher who supervises the candidate for any given step has to fill in a form (see attachments) concerning that step, and send it to the candidate’s tutor
• The candidate has to fill in a self-assessment form (see attachments)
• The tutor then compares the different forms, and helps the candidate to correct their weak areas and to improve their skills
• A Senior FM teacher can, for any reason, refuse to have a candidate present at their course
• Each step requires attendance to a 1st and 2nd level course
• The candidate cannot complete more than one step in a calendar year
• If a teacher’s evaluation of one step is negative, the candidate has to repeat that same step
• At the end of the 3 steps, the tutor will send all the evaluations to the AMF Teachers’ representative so they will be able to check the regularity of these evaluations. The set the exam date will then be set at a time that is compatible with the candidate and an examination board.
Exam
The exam will take place during a Level I and/or Level II course in the presence of at the least two FM teachers, one of which should be a Senior teacher. The candidate’s skills will be assessed during the theoretical lessons, the practical demonstrations and the patient treatment.
For candidates from outside of Italy the exam will take place during the International courses held a Padova, Italy.
